Benjamin James Andrews, Jr.

formerly of Newark Valley

Benjamin James Andrews, Jr., affectionately known as Ben, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on April 17, 2024, after a courageous battle with a rare form of dementia. Born on September 27, 1947, Ben's journey through life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his community.

Ben graduated from Newark Valley High School in 1965, where he made his mark as a tri-sport athlete in football, baseball, and track. He continued his education at Dental Technology College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he met the love of his life, Judy Newton. The two were married in El Paso, Texas, shortly before Ben was deployed to Vietnam to serve his country in the Army. It was there that he formed bonds with fellow soldiers, many of whom became lifelong friends.

Upon returning from the service, Ben and Judy settled down on Dr. Knapp Road in Newark Valley, close to his beloved mother, "Ma." Over the years, they transformed a small cottage by the Owego Creek into a beautiful 4-bedroom home, complete with manicured lawns, gardens, and a swimming pool. This home became the heart of many joyous occasions, from family weddings to neighborhood celebrations, and was a testament to Ben's love for hosting and bringing people together.

Professionally, Ben's career began with delivering propane as a truck driver, from which he ascended to sales and eventually management. In 2002, Ben and Judy embarked on a new adventure, moving to Boulder City, Nevada, to become entrepreneurs. They enjoyed their life next to the stunning Lake Mead until their retirement in 2013.

Ben was a man of many interests and talents. An avid outdoorsman, he cherished the times spent deer hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and hiking. His skills in woodworking and carpentry were unparalleled, and he was always willing to lend a hand with home improvements and repairs. Ben's generosity extended to his friends and family, whom he loved to help whenever the opportunity arose.

Family was the cornerstone of Ben's life. He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 56 years, Judy; daughters Jannette Matula (Michael) with grandchildren Logan and Claire, and Marcianna Cooley (Christopher) with granddaughters Raina and Grace. He also leaves behind his sisters Maryann Mulvenna (Neal), Diane Andrews, and Denise Delatorre, along with a large extended family who will fondly remember his adventurous spirit and friendly nature. Ben was predeceased by his father, Benjamin Andrews Sr., his mother, Mary (Duffek) Andrews, and other extended family members.

As we remember Ben, we are reminded of the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Ben's legacy is one of success, defined by the countless lives he touched with his kindness, his handiness, and his unwavering friendship.

Ben's life was one well-lived, filled with love, laughter, and the joy of shared experiences. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we carry forward the memories and the lessons he imparted. His spirit will continue to inspire and guide us through the love he left behind.

Abiding with his wishes there will be no services. He has donated his brain to help research for a cure. Please consider a memorial contribution to The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, 2700 Horizon Drive, Suite 120, King of Prussia, PA 19406 (www.theaftd.org)
