Arthur C. Evans of Newark ValleySurrounded with the love of his family, Arthur C. Evans, 82, our beloved husband, dad and poppy left his earthly home on July 20, 2015. Born on Jan. 30, 1933 in Plains, PA, he was a son of the late Charles and Elizabeth Evans and brother of the late Milton Evans. Art served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a graduate of Wilkes University and received his MA in Education from Cortland State. For 33 years, he guided many Newark Valley Middle School students while teaching 7th grade social studies, coaching Jr. Varsity Football, and patiently, though sometimes not too patiently, teaching High School Driver Education. Some of the fondest memories of Mr. Evans from his students include his yard stick and walking stick! Art also served as Fire Commissioner for the Town of Newark Valley and was a devoted member of St. John the Evangelist Church.He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara, their children Mark (Jill), John (Nu) Evans and Mary Evans, his treasured grandchildren, Bailee, Chloe, Zachary and Abigail, his sister Emily Oswald and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, Newark Valley on Friday, July 24th at 10 AM. Burial with military honors will be accorded at Hope Cemetery. His family will receive friends and share memories on Thursday from 6-8 PM at the MacPherson Funeral Home in Newark Valley. Those wishing to honor Mr. Evans with a charitable donation are asked to kindly consider the Mercy House of the Southern Tier c/o Church of the Holy Family, 3600 Phyllis St., Endwell, NY 13760 in his memory and would also like to suggest to everyone who knows someone with dementia to give them a big hug.
