Alice Purple Allen, 85, of East Syracuse, passed away with her family at her side on Monday morning, November 24, 2014. Alice was born November 25, 1928 in Newark Valley, a daughter of the late Jay C. and Harriet K. (Harding) Purple. She was a graduate of Newark Valley High School, class of 1947 and graduated from Cortland State Teachers College in 1950. Alice was a long-time elementary school teacher for the Syracuse City School District and volunteer for Meals on Wheels of Syracuse. She was an active member of Plymouth Congregational Church, United Church of Christ. Her gentle touch and caring ways will always remain close to our hearts.Alice was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and loyal friend to many. She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Jack M. Allen; her children, Gary (Mary Ann) Allen of Syracuse; Terry (Patti) Allen of Las Vegas, NV; Janet (David) OHare of Victor; and Nancy (Stephen) Hilton of Vernon, CT; her brother: Paul (Margery) Purple of Newark Valley; her sisters-in-law, June Spangenburg of Owego; and Elizabeth Roe and Joyce Ferland of Bradenton, Fla; her grandchildren, Spencer Allen, Elizabeth Allen, Justin (Marloes) Allen, Casey Allen, Michael (Kara) OHare, Megan OHare, Sarah OHare, Emily Hilton, Olivia Hilton, and Hannah Hilton; her great-granddaughter, Liz Carly Allen; and several nieces, nephews and their families. Alice was predeceased by her sister, Janet Purple Russo. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of Alices life Monday, December 1, at 10:30 a.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church, 232 E. Onondaga Street, Syracuse. Her pastor, Rev. Quinn Caldwell, will officiate. A graveside service will be held at Hope Cemetery, Newark Valley, Saturday, November 29, at noon. Allen.
