TO VIEW THE RECORDING OF JOAN'S MEMORIAL SERVICE: Joan Shaver (gather.app) Joan Elizabeth Hughes Shaver, 88, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Oct. 30, 2021 at Elderwood in Waverly, a home she was grateful to enjoy for the past few years. She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Ray Shaver. She is survived by their 4 children: Lori (Jim) Gridley, Norm (Sharon) Shaver, Carol Faye Shaver, Phill (Robin) Shaver; 4 grandchildren Geren (Shannon) Brink, Rachel (Keith) Shaver-Mellem, Robert (Laura) Shaver, Matthew Shaver; Rachels mother and step-father Marie Santare Shaver and Tom Quigley; 6 great-grandchildren; Marian Brink, Allister Mellem, Lilly, William, Alice, & Easton Shaver; many dear friends, cousins, nieces and nephews. Joan is predeceased by her two sisters, Connie Hughes and Ester Hughes Entzminger; her brother Charles Hughes; her father and mother Leonard and Barbara Baker Hughes and granddaughter Mary Shaver. Joan was actively involved in her community. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church; and the Newark Valley Historical Society. She volunteered as Town Historian helping to write Newark Valley history for the Tioga County centennial book Season of Change; volunteered and worked at Owegos Riverview Manor Nursing Home; acted as a docent at the Bement Billings Farmstead Museum; worked with her good friend Betty Yetter at the Newark Valley Train Depot (now the Ray Shaver Train Depot) making and selling concessions; supported the Newark Valley Quilters and their many community projects over the years. Joan was most appreciative of Marcia Kiechles dedication to her community. Joan and her friend Lorraine Grant had several of their quilts with fine hand stitching published in a quilting magazine. She was her own familys historian as well. She uncovered intrigue (murder by poison) and documented lineage for many of her family connections. She shared her sisters curiosity for international travel by going to Turkey where she learned to use a digital camera, appreciate a different culture, and took captivating pictures when she was in her 70s. Joan was always interested in learning more about her community. Reading and listening to literature, sewing, quilting, and yoga were her hobbies. She supported her husband in his hobbies and activities as well, helping to build and maintain a small ski tow for their family and friends. Her family will receive friends at MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley, on Wednesday, November 24th from 10 to 11 am followed by a memorial service there at 11am . Inurnment will be in Hope Cemetery.
