Helen A. Crofoot, 93, passed peacefully in her sleep into her new life early Monday morning, Feb. 13, 2012. She was a loving and devoted Mother to her daughters: Helen A. (Charles) Hathaway, Donna L. (Duke Allen)Crofoot, Cynthia C. Anderson, Patricia K. (Dan Winkler) Sweet; a cherished grandmother to: Eric (Sue) Hathaway, Donald (Jen) Hathaway, Paulette (Sam) Williams, Steven (Jennifer) Osborn, Jessie Anderson, Amanda, Carrie and Siara Sweet and great grandmother to: Tyler, Emily, Aurora, Lydia, Ryan, Emily, Alexis, Madison; She will also be greatly missed by her sisters: Mary (Ernie) Hamer, Jane Cook, Nancy Shea, sister-in-law Susan H. Crofoot, nieces, nephews and many treasured friends. Born on March 31, 1918, in Utica, Helen was the daughter of Russell L. and Flora (Roberts) Alexander. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by 2 infants, her loving husband of 62 years, Robert, her sister, Flora Smith, her grandson, Jonathan Crofoot Anderson, and her great-grandson Max Hathaway. She was a 1934 graduate of Utica Free Academy. In 1956 she and Bob established their home in Newark Valley and became very active members of the community. She was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church, served as a Girl Scout Leader locally and at Camp Comstock in Ithaca and opened her door to many children. She joined ONYX Chapter 196 OES in 1956, became a life member in 2000, held many offices including Point of Adah, Historian and Worthy Matron (3 times) and received The Service Award in 1995. She and Bob also belonged to Military Officers Association of America (MOAA); were Charter Members of Winnebago Assoc. and enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the country making many friends along the way. Following her retirement from IBM, Owego in 1977 she became a well known AVON Lady and WATKINS Distributor in the area. As an avid bowler, she was able to continue her weekly games until June 2011.She will be greatly missed.A Funeral Service and Celebration of Helens Life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, Feb. 18 at The First United Methodist Church, Newark Valley with her Pastor, Rev. Nancy J. Adams, officiating. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 4-8 PM on Friday at the MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley where Eastern Star Service will be conducted at 7:30 PM.
