Evelyn Martin

June 9, 1925 — April 4, 2023

Evelyn Mae (Tull) Martin, 97, of Berkshire, NY passed away peacefully at her home of 78 years on April 4, 2023. She was born on June 9, 1925 in Maine, NY to the late DeVer and Lona (Lindsey) Tull. Evelyn was predeceased by her devoted husband, Robert Louis Martin, and her son, Robert Edward Martin. She was also predeceased by her brothers Merle, Clyde, Gerald, and Gordon and her sisters Nellie Huson and Vera Doty. She is survived by her affectionate daughter, Rosalie, and her sister-in-law Mildred Tull. Several nieces and nephews and their families also survive.

Evelyn began her education in a one room schoolhouse on Anderson Hill in Candor, NY. After moving to Berkshire, she completed her education at Newark Valley High School as a member of the Class of 1943. That same year, she married Robert at the Army chapel in Kansas City, Missouri before he was deployed to the Pacific region. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Berkshire for 76 years and participated in many areas of church life, including Sunday School, Women’s Fellowship, and Junior-Senior Choirs. Evelyn also expressed her faith through the compassion and kindness she extended to others: caring for family members, working on mission projects, and volunteering for charitable organizations. In addition to her role as a homemaker, Evelyn was a floral designer in the business that she created with her husband. She also served as a bookkeeper for Dr. Arthur Hartnagel, a well-known physician in Berkshire. For several years, Evelyn was employed by The First National Bank of Newark Valley as a teller. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, crocheting, craft projects, and watching Yankee baseball games. Evelyn was a person of quiet strength and a gentle spirit. Those qualities were revealed in the way she lived every day of her life. She reached out to people offering friendship, a helping hand, and words of encouragement. She had a wonderfully clear, common sense intelligence that could always find solutions to problems. Above all, Evelyn will be fondly remembered as a loving daughter, wife, mother, aunt, sister, and friend.
